Triangles 1st Annual Iron Chef Competition for Habitat for Humanity

The 1st Annual Iron Chef Competition at the University of Louisville was hosted on March 24th by Triangle Fraternity to raise money in a fun way for Habitat for Humanity. This competition was based on the popular television show Iron Chef America and it featured UofL’s sorority women as the star chefs. Six teams competed to see who had the best cooking skills on campus. Coming into the event the sorority teams prepared for the cooking challenge by compiling recipes that would compliment the three special ingredient choices that were given. Of those three special ingredients, one was unveiled as the ingredient of the night only seconds before the clock started. Though it was a guessing game as to what the special ingredient would be, there were no hesitations on each team member’s role when the pineapples were revealed as the food-of-choice.

In the one hour that was allotted for cooking, there was a hectic rush of people trying to prepare for the three courses that each team was required to make. Things became even more distracting due to lost ingredients and broken burners, not to mention the pressure from the judges as they walked around asking questions. There is nothing that will bring brotherhood to a group of guys than being surrounded by a team of distraught sorority women who are in fear of losing a competition. Nevertheless, everybody managed to accommodate the minor complications and eventually the hour passed with all the food finished and ready to eat.

Each course was tested and judged based on taste, presentation, and use of the special ingredient. The judges, who were local UofL celebrities, had surprisingly good taste and an affinity for asking just the right questions to get the full effect of the food. After the rigorous judging was over, Sigma Kappa Sorority was announced the overall winner in a very close competition. In our 1st Iron Chef competition we raised over seven hundred dollars for Habitat for Humanity. This event was a great success and everyone that participated had a great time doing it. The Triangle Iron Chef Competition has the potential to grow even larger in the years to come.
